SEMH Needs in SEND
What are SEMH needs?
Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs are one of the four broad areas of need that can affect learners with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Learners with SEMH challenges may struggle to manage emotions, behaviour, or social interactions, which can affect learning, friendships, and overall wellbeing.
These needs are not always visible and can be triggered by life experiences, mental health conditions, or environmental factors. Early support helps learners build resilience and succeed in school life.
What are the signs a learner may have SEMH needs?
Some learners may show one or more of the following:
Difficulty managing emotions, e.g., anger, frustration, or anxiety
Low mood or frequent sadness
Challenges with social interaction or making friends
Behaviour that disrupts learning or relationships
Avoidance of school or certain tasks due to stress or anxiety
Recognising these signs allows teachers and tutors to create supportive learning environments and prevent long-term difficulties.
What are the causes and related challenges of SEMH needs?
SEMH needs can arise from a variety of factors:
Mental health conditions – anxiety, depression, or ADHD
Life experiences – trauma, loss, or family stress
Environmental challenges – bullying, social pressure, or unstable routines
Learners may also experience SEMH needs alongside other SEND areas, like cognition or communication difficulties.
How can you support learners with SEMH needs?
Build trusting relationships – learners respond well to consistent and supportive adults
Provide predictable routines – structure reduces anxiety and helps focus
Teach emotional regulation skills – mindfulness, breathing exercises, or coping strategies
Create safe spaces – allow students time-out areas to self-regulate if needed
Use PSHE resources – Peerscroller can give learners practical tips on coping strategies, building resilience, and practising social skills
In the classroom, try to break tasks into manageable steps to reduce overwhelm, provide praise and celebrate small achievements and integrate PSHE lessons that focus on mental health and self-awareness.

We’ve got videos that help learners understand emotional wellbeing and mental health, supporting both peers and learners with SEMH needs. Some related videos explore:
Emotional regulation – how learners manage stress, anxiety, or strong emotions.
Understanding behaviours – explores behaviours linked to overstimulation, hyperfocus, or coping strategies.
Self-confidence and coping – approaches learners use to build confidence and resilience.
